Answer: Kilogram (kg).

10. What is volume?

Answer: Volume is the space occupied by matter.

F. Short Answer Questions

1. Why do we classify materials?

Answer:- We classify materials to arrange them into groups according to their similarities and differences. Classification helps us study, compare and understand the properties of materials easily.

2. Differentiate between lustrous and non-lustrous materials with examples.

Answer:

Lustrous                                             Non-lustrous

  • Have a shiny surface                     Do not have a shiny surface
  • Usually include metals                     Include materials such as wood and paper
  • Examples: iron, copper                     Examples: wood, rubber

3. What is the difference between hard and soft materials?

Answer:- Hard materials are difficult to compress or scratch, such as stone and iron. Soft materials can be compressed or scratched easily, such as sponge and eraser.

4. Differentiate between transparent, translucent and opaque materials.

Answer:- - Transparent: Objects can be seen clearly through them. Example: clear glass.

- Translucent: Objects can be seen but not clearly. Example: frosted glass.

- Opaque: Objects cannot be seen through them. Example: wood.

5. What is the difference between soluble and insoluble materials?

Answer:- Soluble materials dissolve completely in water, such as sugar and salt. Insoluble materials do not dissolve in water, such as sand and sawdust.

6. Why is the choice of material important while making an object?

Answer:- The material is selected according to its properties and the purpose for which the object is to be used. For example, a tumbler should be made from a material capable of holding water.

7. Explain the difference between mass and volume.

Answer:- Mass tells us the quantity of matter present in an object. Volume is the space occupied by matter. Mass is commonly measured in grams or kilograms, while volume is commonly measured in litres or millilitres.

G. Long Answer Questions

1. Explain what materials are. Why are materials classified?

Answer:- A material is a substance used to make an object. Objects around us are made from different materials such as wood, paper, metal, glass, plastic and clay.

Materials are classified according to their common properties. Classification helps us arrange, compare and study materials easily. They may be classified according to properties such as colour, hardness, softness, lustre, transparency and solubility.

2. Explain lustrous and non-lustrous materials. Are all shiny materials metals?

Answer:- Materials having shiny surfaces are called lustrous materials. Iron, copper, zinc and aluminium are examples.

Materials that do not have shiny surfaces are called non-lustrous materials. Paper, wood, rubber and jute are examples.

No, all shiny materials are not metals. Some materials can be made shiny by polishing or coating them with another material.

3. Explain transparent, translucent and opaque materials with examples.

Answer:- Transparent: Materials through which objects can be seen clearly are transparent. Example: clear glass.

Translucent: Materials through which objects can be seen but not clearly are translucent. Examples: butter paper and frosted glass.

Opaque: Materials through which objects cannot be seen are opaque. Examples: wood, cardboard and metals.     C

4. What are soluble and insoluble materials? Explain with examples.

Answer:- A material that dissolves completely in water is called soluble. Sugar and salt are examples.

A material that does not dissolve in water is called insoluble. Sand, sawdust and chalk powder are examples.

Thus, when sugar is mixed with water, it disappears because it dissolves. Sand remains separate because it is insoluble.

5. What is matter? Explain mass and volume.

Answer:- Anything that occupies space and has mass is called matter.

Matter has two important properties:

1. Mass: It tells us the quantity of matter present in an object. The units commonly used are gram (g) and kilogram (kg).

2. Volume: It is the space occupied by matter. Common units are litre (L) and millilitre (mL). The SI unit of volume is cubic metre (m³).

Therefore, mass and volume are important properties of matter.

6. What properties would you consider while selecting materials for a chair, water container and cooking utensil?

Answer:- For a chair, we may consider:

- Hardness

- Strength

- Weight

- Comfort

- Ease of cleaning

For a water container, we need a material that:

- Can hold water

- Does not allow water to pass through easily

- Is strong and suitable for the purpose

For a cooking utensil, the material should be suitable for cooking and should have appropriate properties for its intended use.

Thus, the choice of material depends on its properties and the purpose of the object.

7. Explain how properties of materials determine their uses.

Answer:- Different materials have different properties, so they are selected for different purposes.

- Iron is hard and strong, so it can be used for many strong objects.

- Glass is transparent, so it is useful for windows and containers where seeing the contents is helpful.

- Sugar is soluble in water, so it can be used in drinks.

- Wood is generally hard and opaque, so it can be used for furniture.

- Plastic can be useful for containers because it can be made into different shapes and is suitable for many everyday uses.

Thus, the properties of a material help us decide where and how it can be used.
